Quora: Why do I see things so well for others but not for myself?

A: Got the same issue.

It’s like trying to look at the inside of your own eyelids.
When you are that close to something, you just don’t see it.

With other people it is easier to remain objective and to judge fairly (according to one’s own values). When you look at yourself, you don’t see the whole picture, but thousands of details.

The “yeah, but…” pops up, and things that appear obvious when you look at someone else, suddenly appear fuzzy when you look at yourself.

Just like the joke says, “If you want to know how to raise your kids right, just imagine that they are someone else’s”.

The same goes for your life.

Imagine that you are someone else, looking at you, at your life. What advice would you give that person?

All smokers know they should quit, yet they don’t. All battered wives know that they should leave, yet they don’t.

We usually know the right answer to our questions, but we don’t always have the courage to face it.
